From the Midst of Life: Actress Lilly Forgách Has Passed Away

Munich (dpa) – Until recently, Lilly Forgách was fully immersed in life. She was a member of the Munich Metropoltheater ensemble and a sought-after film and television actress, known for roles such as in the delightful Bavarian Broadcasting series Himmel, Herrgott, Sakrament. However, the Regensburg-born actress will not see the airing of her latest film, Sievers und das Geisterhaus, part of the ZDF crime series Nord Nord Mord, scheduled for December 23. Lilly Forgách passed away on Sunday in Munich after a brief but severe illness. She passed peacefully in the morning, her family shared on Facebook.

Hoping for a Joyful Soul

The heartfelt post by her husband, Jochen Schölch, and son, Valentin, on Forgách’s Facebook page reveals a time of hope and despair. “After miraculously surviving a ruptured brain aneurysm in March, she underwent a second surgery in September,” wrote Schölch, the artistic director of the Metropoltheater, and their son. “Two days later, she suffered a stroke. She spent 12 weeks in a coma, the last three of which were on palliative care.” She will be laid to rest in early January in an urn.

The photos selected by Schölch and his son depict a smiling, lively, and beautiful woman—a portrayal confirmed by her agent, Beate Mittermayer. Lilly Forgách was “incredibly kind, versatile, and helpful,” said Mittermayer to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur. She had a large circle of friends and acquaintances. “She was incredibly beloved because of her empathy; she cared for everyone.”

A Shock to Many

The news of her death has left many, including those in the film industry, in shock. “I hoped so much that you’d wake up and recover. You wonderful Lilly!” wrote actress Stefanie von Poser, who worked with Forgách on the ARD crime series Watzmann ermittelt. Author Amelie also shared her condolences: “She was such a kind woman. My deepest sympathies to her family and friends.”

A Career in Acting

Forgách studied acting at a school in Munich. Early in her career, she starred alongside Jan Josef Liefers and Marie Bäumer in the horror-comedy Sieben Monde. On stage, her agency reported that she performed at venues such as the Residenztheater, Prinzregententheater, and Volkstheater in Munich, as well as at city theaters in Regensburg, Nuremberg, and Klagenfurt, Austria. In 1999, she joined the Metropoltheater ensemble, where she was last seen in the literary adaptation of The Eighth Life, based on a novel by Nino Haratischwili.

Reflections on Loss

For the 2021 ARD film Eine Liebe später by Michaela Kezele, Forgách contemplated death. She portrayed a woman whose son dies, leaving behind his wife and two children. In an interview on the ARD website, Forgách described her character as learning to cope with the pain of loss. “Grief is a process that never ends,” she said.
